Research permission, informed consent and consent of the data subject
When planning research, find out if you need a research permission for your research. Please note that the terms research permission, the participant’s informed consent to participate in research and consent to the processing of personal data refer to different issues. If you process data in your research that is related to living persons, you will probably also process personal data and you should familiarize yourself with the guidelines for data protection in research.
Below you will find information on how to proceed if you are planning to carry out research on the organisation, personnel or students at the University of Lapland. In case you are seeking for information about ethical principles and informed consent procedures, read more here.

Research settings that require a research permission from the university
If you intend to carry out research on the organisation, personnel or students of the University of Lapland, you need a research permission if at least one of these conditions apply to your research:
- the research requires ethical review
- the research plan includes a request of personal data from the university
No research permission is required if you are asking us to forward a survey invitation or information about the study to the personnel and/or staff, and you are not requesting us to disclose any personal data or documents.
If the study focuses on a specific unit of the university, the director/dean of the unit will decide on the research permission.
Research permission and ethical review
If the study requires ethical review, the request for ethical review must be carried out at the committee that handles the ethical reviews of the PIs host horganisation. The statement from the ethics committee must be appended to the request for research permission, when applicable.
Processing of personal data
If the research plan includes processing of personal data, the procedures for processing the data and the actions to be taken to ensure the rights of the data subjects must be described in detail in the documents attached to the request for research permission. (compulsory attachment: notification of personal data processing)
