Sámi Studies

We study the Sámi identity – society, culture and rights.

Multidisciplinary Sámi studies are part of the research activities of all our faculties. In addition, Sámi studies in social and legal sciences are part of our university’s national special duty, and they also form a central part of the university’s profile.

In our research and teaching, we examine questions related to Sámi identity from the perspective and framework of Sámi society. Additionally, we examine these questions within a broader context as part of national, international and Indigenous scholarly discourses. Our research is focused on, among other things, the social, cultural and political structures and relationships of Sámi societies, well-being, livelihoods, land use, legislation, arts and education.

Our partners include the following, among others:

  • Giellagas Institute from the University of Oulu
  • Sámi University of Applied Sciences
  • The Sámi Education Institute

Our university has strong connections to Nordic Sámi studies, Arctic Indigenous studies and local Sámi communities. The university is also an active participant in the UArctic and BCBU networks, among others

Ethical guidelines for research involving the Sámi people in Finland

Ethical guidelines have been prepared for research involving the Sámi people, and they have been published in Finnish, North Sámi, Inari Sámi, Skolt Sámi and English. The guidelines apply to all research on Sámi people conducted in Finland. The guidelines have been prepared by a working group (mostly in Finnish, some content in English) in cooperation with Sámi communities and researchers.
