Registering as a Student

Here you can find information about registering as a student. Look below for the enrollment category that applies to you. There you will find more specific instructions for your situation. After admission to the university, you have the right to work toward the pursued degree. In order to maintain the right to study, you are required to register as an attending or a non-attending student separately for each academic year. Please note that you are required to be registered as attending in order to receive credit for courses of study or to receive a scholarship.

It takes a day for the information on registrations to be transferred to the university’s student register.

If you do not have a Finnish bank account, you may pay the Student Union membership fee by credit card or cash at the Student Union office. If you wish to pay the membership fee using a non-Finnish bank account, please see the bank account details on the Student Union web pages. Please note that you will be required to present proof of payment either by sending a copy or the payment receipt or an equivalent document showing the transaction by email at [opinto (at) ulapland.fi] or by presenting the document in person at the Student Services office (wing E, ground floor). After this, your registration status as an attending student will be entered into the student register.

Register as a non-attending student during the registration period in the OILI enrolment and registration service for students. As a non-attending student, you are freed from paying the student union membership fee. You can change your non-attending registration to an attending one outside of the ordinary registration period by contacting the Student Services. If you do not complete your registration by the deadline, you will lose your right to study. To have your study right reactivated, you are required to pay a re-enrolment fee of 50 € and send the receipt of the payment to Student Services by email (opinto(at)ulapland.fi.

Important! The re-enrolment fee is paid into a different account than the Student Union membership fee.

After having paid the fee, please send or bring the receipt to the Student Services. Please note that the amount has to be paid in total to the university account. Please check with your bank about possible transfer payments that might be deducted from the amount.

  • If you register as an attending student for the autumn semester only, do your registration in OILI enrolment and registration service for students. 
  • If you register as an attending student for the spring semester only, please pay the Student Union membership fee for the spring and contact the Student Services to have your information entered in the Peppi study administration system correctly.

The Student Union fee doesn’t include the FSHS (Finnish Student Health Service, YTHS in Finnish) health care. The healthcare fee for higher education students is paid to Kela. Read more about the healthcare fee for higher education students.

If you are not a degree pursing student at the University of Lapland, one-time registration at the beginning of your studies covers the entire duration of your studies.

Non-degree studies are:

  • pedagogical studies
  • specialisation studies
  • cross-institutional studies
  • multidisciplinary studies in teaching subjects
  • Arctic Studies Programme studies
  • studies completed by foreign exchange students.

You must be registered as attending (present) when you graduate.

  • If you anticipate graduating in the autumn, you only need to register for the respective autumn semester. In that case, pay the Student Union membership fee and FSHS (Finnish Student Health Service, YTHS in Finnish) fee to KELA only for the autumn semester.
  • If your studies have been completed and you have applied for the degree certificate by 31 July, you don’t need to register as attending student for the next autumn semester.

 

As a doctoral researcher you must register as either attending or non-attending for each academic year separately. You can only have your study attainments included in your transcript of records if you are registered as an attending student. For more information, see the Registration section above.

If you wish, you can also become a member of the Student Union by paying the membership fee of LYY, the Student Union of the University of Lapland.

  1. Students paying a full or partial tuition fee
    Students required to pay a full or partial tuition fee should pay both the tuition fee and the Student Union membership fee before registration as attending for the next academic year. Registration status as attending is a prerequisite for signing up for courses and earning credits. Please see here for more details about paying the tuition fee.   2. Students with a full scholarship
    If you have been awarded a full scholarship, you need to pay the Student Union membership fee prior to registration as an attending student for the next academic year. The registration status as attending is a prerequisite for earning credits. You may also pay the Student Union membership fee by bank transfer, credit card or cash at the Student Union office. NOTE

Make sure you have enough ECTS by July 31
If you are a Master’s degree student from outside the EU or EEA countries and you have started your studies in autumn 2017 or later:

Make sure you have enough ECTS accumulated during the first year of your studies by July 31.

1. You are expected to have completed a minimum of 55 ECTS per academic year. Students completing at least 55 credits during their first year will be automatically granted the same scholarship for the second year of their studies. Students failing to complete the minimum required number of credits will be obliged to pay the tuition fee in full.

Membership of the Student Union

The Student Union of the University of Lapland (LYY) represents our students and offers its members a wide range of member services, advocacy, benefits, events and advice on the challenges of studying and everyday life. Membership of the Student Union is compulsory for all Bachelor and Master degree students. For doctoral researchers membership is voluntary.

Bachelors and Masters degree Students

Membership of the Student Union of the University of Lapland (LYY) and payment of the membership fee are compulsory if you are pursuing a Bachelor or Master degree (Universities Act 558/2009/46§). Pay the membership fee when you register for the academic year at the university in the OILI registration service.

  • Membership fees academic year 2025-2026:
    61 € whole academic year, 30 € only autumn semester, 31 € only spring semester
  • The fee doesn’t include the FSHS (Finnish Student Health Service, YTHS in Finnish) health care. The Act on Student Health Services for Students in Higher Education has come into effect on 1 January 2021. The healthcare fee for higher education students for now on is paid to Kela.   • Other: Wellness Pass (45 €/year), he pass works digitally and is activated in the Kide.app application at the start of the pass services.

Membership for Doctoral Researchers

As a doctoral researcher you the membership of the Student Union is optional for you.

The student benefits for doctoral researchers are more limited than those for students studying for a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree. The membership fee is €39 for the whole academic year or, if paid separately, €31 for the autumn semester and €32 for the spring semester.
