Plan your exchange studies at ULapland

Who can apply?

In order to apply for exchange studies to the University of Lapland, you need to fulfil some criteria. Please check below if you are eligible.

We can only accept you as a student if you have an active study right at a partner university with one of the following agreements:

  • Erasmus+
  • Nordplus / Nordlys
  • North2North
  • Bilateral mobility agreements

If your home university does not have an agreement with the University of Lapland, we do not accept your nomination.

To be accepted as an exchange student at the university of Lapland, you need to have sufficient knowledge of English, both oral and written.

The required minimum levels are at least:

  • CERF: B2
  • IELTS: 6
  • TOEFL iBT: 87
  • Or equivalents (reviewed separately)

You must prove your English skills in the SoleMOVE online application e.g. with:

  • a transcript of records,
  • letter from the home university
  • or official language test such as TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic or similar.

You must have completed at least one full year of studies at a Higher Education Institution to be eligible to apply for exchange studies to the University of Lapland.

Which studies are available?

The study offer is usually published in April/May for the upcoming academic year. The timetables will be available in the beginning of August. If you are planning your studies before the study offer is published – don’t worry, just orient with the previous year’s study offer. It seldom changes radically. 

The University of Lapland offers studies for exchange studies in four faculties and the language centre:

  • Faculty of Education
  • Faculty of Art and Design
  • Faculty of Social Sciences
  • Faculty of Law
  • Language Centre

Take into account the following when looking for studies:

  • There are only few restrictions, which you can figure out by reading the course descriptions carefully. Usually it concerns prerequisites regarding earlier studies.
  • The courses of the Faculty of Art and Design are available only to the students of this faculty. As an art and design exchange student you can also choose courses of the other faculties as well as from the Language Centre. 
  • If you are a BA-level student you are usually allowed to choose studies from MA-level as well.
  • Studies that are agreed to be possible in English are collected in the Courses for exchange students and courses in English. Please only choose from there.
  • Please consult the specific instructions per faculty below.

Education student
You cannot choose teaching experience courses unless you are a Teacher Training student.

We ask you to choose one of the modules and select courses for your study plan within it. The modules are designed so that there is no overlapping in timetables. It is however possible to take self-study courses from other modules.

Political Studies student
Choose courses from: Political Science, International Relations, Law, Arctic Studies Programme, China: Domestic, Global and Arctic Trajectories, Languages, UniPID (and even Administrative Sciences)

Sociology student
Choose courses from: Sociology, Cultural History, Arctic Studies Programme, UniPID (and even Tourism Research)

Social Work student
Choose courses from: Social Work, Gender Studies, Global Education, UniPID

Management/Business Studies student
Choose courses from: Management, Administrative Sciences, Political Studies, Tourism Research, UniPID

Law modules:

  •  Public International Law
  •  Commercial Law
  •  European Union Law
  •  European Constitutional Law
  •  Legal Systems and Cultures

Each of these modules is made up of a variety of courses, making up more than 30 ECTS. These courses may be chosen individually as well.

You may choose individual courses from the minor study programs like intercultural communication or English language and culture studies.

Network studies

In addition, ULapland exchange students may also choose courses from the Finnish universities collaboration networks. UniPID and Hilma courses are included in the Faculty of Education Study Guide and Sosnet in Social Sciences

(Online) Learning Agreements

As part of the application process you need to prepare a learning agreement (LA) for the full duration of your exchange. LA is needed to make sure that your planned studies are based on the ULapland study offer and that they are accepted by your home university.

Non-Erasmus+ students
Learning Agreement form is available for you to use.
You may use our or your university’s own LA form.

Erasmus+ students
ULapland endorses Erasmus+ Online Learning Agreement and Erasmus+ Mobile App applications. During the transition period, we accept learning agreements both via OLA or as printed versions. In both cases the student has to upload PDF -version of the LA in her/his application in SoleMOVE, our mobility application tool.

Please take into account the following when preparing your (Online) Learning Agreement:

  • ULapland requires you to choose minimum 25 ECTS credits of studies per semester unless otherwise agreed with your home institution. Usually your home institution requires 30 ECTS credits of studies per semester.
  • Choose maximum 35 ECTS credits per semester.
  • ULapland courses may last from one week to whole semester which means that your timetable may vary week to week.
  • ULapland offers both lectured courses and independent study modules i.e. book exams = independent study based on informed and agreed literature in the course description, and completion of assignment.
