The Master’s degree programme in Tourism, Culture and International Management (TourCIM) has been created to meet the demand for professionals with the ability to develop and execute responsible tourism. The two-year Master’s degree programme provides you with knowledge and tools necessary to work on the interface between the production and consumption of tourism experiences.

The TourCIM programme is based on the assumption that an in-depth understanding of the values underlying business strategies and consumption practices are essential for the development of responsible tourism. Our teaching and research reflect this premise and consider cultural and lifestyle-related research and knowledge, in particular, as crucial for gaining insights into existing and future tourism markets.

About the TourCIM programme

  • 1st semester: Christmas Experience Academy (5 ECTS), Corporate Social Responsibility and Ethics (5 ECTS), Revenue Management and Leadership (5 ECTS), Electives 10 ECTS
  • 2nd semester: Responsible Value Formation in Tourism (5 ECTS), Designing Tourism Futures (5 ECTS), Human Capital in Tourism (5 ECTS), Electives 10 ECTS
  • 3rd semester: Strategy for Sustainable Futures (5 ECTS), Master Thesis Seminar (10 ECTS), Electives 5 ECTS
  • 4th semester: Managing Cultural Events (5 ECTS), Qualitative Analysis (5 ECTS), Master Thesis (40 ECTS)

Major subject is Tourism Research.

TourCIM provides a sound grounding for tourism- and hospitality related careers. It prepares you for identifying opportunities, working innovatively and critically evaluating tourism production and consumption practices. The programme will boost your credentials as a tourism and hospitality professional in private and public tourism organisations, or will provide you with the knowledge needed to develop your own business. The TourCIM degree will open up a range of career paths in fields such as management, entrepreneurship, service design, planning, consultancy or research.

Under the Finnish legislation, a person who has taken the degree of Master of Social Sciences is qualified for posts or positions in the public sector for which the qualification requirement is a second-cycle higher education degree. In some cases, the qualification requirement also includes the completion of studies in certain specified fields of study.

Go International at University of Lapland

As a student at the University of Lapland you have the possibility to get international experience for example by going for an exchange or doing an internship abroad, participating on a short mobility, becoming a My Global Diary Ambassador or an international tutor! In addition to language and cultural knowledge international experience gives you many acquirements for your future career.

Our goal is that each student gets a degree, which gives you acquirements for internationality and strengths in international labor markets. The goals of international competencies will be discussed with your teacher tutor and will be planned as a part of your personal study plan. Student exchange is always planned carefully in a way, that all credits done abroad can be transferred as a part of your degree. You can do a minor abroad, individual courses that are a part of your degree, an internship or specialization studies, which are not offered in the University of Lapland.

Eligibility for doctoral studies.

As a university-level subject, Tourism Research is based on science and generation of new relevant knowledge. The programme offers you instruction and tools for creating and applying ideas that can transform the tourism sector and the whole world. These tools will benefit you both immediately and in the long run.

The research interests of the faculty lie primarily in questions of:

  • responsible tourism planning,
  • participatory approaches, and
  • multispecies coexistence and cultural sensitivity in tourism.

We approach the sustainability of tourism in the contexts of:

  • hospitality,
  • diverse operating environments as well as
  • working and learning together.
